Five of Spain’s main agricultural organizations announced a massive day of strikes and protests across the province of Jaén for February 24.
The organizations want protestors to gather in the town squares of 97 municipalities across the province to demand fair prices for olive oil and more support for traditional olive groves.
The organizations have been emboldened by the success of an earlier protest in Jaén in which four highways were blocked by olive growers and oil producers. These protests resulted in a meeting between the organizations and Luis Planas, the minister of agriculture, food and fisheries.
The Union of Small Farmers and Ranchers (UPA), the Association of Young Farmers and Ranchers (Asaja), the Coordinator of Agriculture and Livestock Organizations (COAG), the Agri-food Cooperatives of Andalusia and the Spanish Federation of Industrial Olive Oil Manufacturers put out the call to action on Monday.
They hope that further protests and disruptions will lead to more concessions from the Spanish government and additional pressure on Brussels for aid.
